80/20 Principal Applied To Your Sales Letters


Have you heard of Pareto?

How about the 80/20 principal?

If you haven’t you need to get brushed up because it will change the way you do everything in life. It basically states that 80% of all the results come from only 20% of the inputs.

Since you’re in business or want to be, let’s look at it from a money stand point.

Your job is to figure out that most important 20% and ramp it up like crazy.

Here’s how you can apply this to your sales letters or any sales copy you write for you business…

The Headline and Lead


The 20% of any marketing collateral that brings in the most money is the headline and lead. The lead is the opening of the piece. Many legendary copywriters state that they’ll take 90% of the time writing just this part of the copy… because it’s that important.

You have to work very hard and long on this part of the letter and here’s how to do that.

1. Keep writing headlines


Keep writing headline after headline after headline. The more you write the greater the chance you’ll find one that really hits home. The actual act of writing them comes from your research.

Here’s a cool tip you can use that I learned from a great copywriter, Brian Keith Voiles. Print out all the headlines you write (hopefully around 50 or so). Read them, find pieces you like, cut them apart and paste them together to create the ultimate headline.

It works and it is fun to do.

2. Learn the types of leads

Ask any copywriter and you will get a different answer. But to keep things simple… you can use these six types of leads. They are going to be arranged in order of how familiar your prospect is with your product.

  • Make a big promise – very familiar with your product
  • Invitation
  • State problem than solution
  • Tell a story
  • Show a secret
  • Make a prediction – least familiar with your product


Use this as your guide for creating your sales letters and landing pages.

That will help you piece together this most important 20% of your sales materials. If you can talk directly to your prospects desires and bring them into your copy… then you have them 80% sold.

The only thing left to do is make some more claims and back them up with proof and you should have another sale.
