5 Key Factors To Help You Pick The Right Copywriter

Launching a product, service, nonprofit group, or just trying to create some PR, hiring a copywriter to help you with your sales copy is vital. While you can… you don’t just want to throw some hypish phrases together and expect a prospect to fall for it.

It takes some methodology.

Hiring a copywriter is a difficult proposition. There are tons of wannabes out there who a turning their copywriting career into the next fly-by-night excursion. However, you can find amazing copywriters who are on their way to the top echelons of the industry… and don’t require a mortgage to pay for… yet.

Here are five key factors to consider when you are interviewing potential copywriters to work with.

1. Awake To The Internet

Is this potential copywriter awake to the age of the Internet? Don’t scoff at me because you will be surprised at how many people in general are completely clueless to creating an effective web presence.

You need to lookout for a functional website. With all the different solutions out there making it so easy to create a beautiful website, any copywriter who neglects to do this may not care so much about the copy they write. So look for a some-what pretty but more importantly very functional website.

Most professionals now should have blogs. So a blog chalks up some bonus points.

2. Open To Make Contact

Is this potential copywriter open to talking with you… either through email or phone?

This is important because being open to talk shows that they are not trying to hide anything and they conduct business in a personal manner. Each potential project deserves the full initial attention of a potential copywriter.

There was this copywriter I heard of once that just had an Internet form on his site. Besides this being the only way you were able to contact him… the form didn’t work. I always wonder if he was wondering why his business was not growing.

3. Obvious Experience

This is a little harder to decipher. You of course want the most experienced copywriter to help you with your marketing plan and especially the sales copy. However this is not always a viable choice. The most experienced copywriters usually are asking $25,000 plus for a sales letter.

And since all copywriters started from the same spot… ground zero… you can try to find the next up and comer. But this can be a near impossible task as well. So what do you do?

At least make sure that the copywriter you are considering has completed either some jobs for other clients or has created converting sales letters for his own business/products. That way you know his work has produced results in the past – a strong indicator that this copywriter will do it again and again.

4. A Scheduled System

No need to scratch your head trying to figure out what a scheduled system is. It is simply a system of dealing with projects. If you find a copywriter who is willy nilly and just pumps out your letter without much follow up or consultation… you know you have a loser in your hand.

But… if your potential copywriter lays out a system to follow and this system is a step-by-step process then you probably have a winner. I can’t tell you the number of times when I dealt with copywriters in the past and then never followed up or even did a consultation. The copy was sad and didn’t convert because they didn’t understand the market.

5. Nurturing of Response

You want a copywriter who cares about the response you get. If they are not adding big bucks, big donors, or big interviews into your business then that should drive them up the wall… enough to do a complete rewrite of the letter for you.

A copywriter who wants to hear more about how you are doing shows that they will do what it takes to make your project a winner. It is a clear win-win situation. You win because your business is booming and the copywriter wins because they have another killer letter to add to their resume… and reputation.

Consider these five factors when you are searching for your next copywriter. You never know when a lack of one of these can cause you great distress and a failed project. These are not all the factors to consider… just some of the big ones… so keep your eyes peeled and listen to your gut too.
